Rozumiem już czemu tyle fandomu lubi FuuKam, faktycznie szip miły i ładny, w dodatku w przeciwieństwie do SeiSubów podchodzi mi i w wersji puchatej i grzecznej z początku, i mhrocznej i ponurej z dalszej części.

On a whim, I read the Escaflowne manga (the shoujo version). It was short, it had nice art, I enjoyed the anime and, most importantly, it had been lying on my hard drive for a long time.

Well, it reminded me how much I loved the anime, made me realize how many things about it I forgot and how I could use a rewatch.

Other than that, it was terrible.

To elaborate: most of the characters were gone, including my favorites (though to be honest, some of the hated ones disappeared, too), and the rest were completely unrecognizable. The character development was either nonexistent or sudden and unnatural.  The new characters (because there was no place to spare for the old characters, but there was some for the author's OCs) were so stereotypical it hurt. I get that it's hard to compress a 26-episode anime in a 2-volume series and changes had to be made, and the new plot could, probably, maybe, under the right circumstances, be defended and made into something readable, but the characterization, terrible pacing and chaotic storytelling made it a nightmare. On a more personal note - no mecha fights! No angel wings! No flying on robotic dragons! No overarching theme of fighting destiny and making your own! (oh, right, add it to the list - a cheap, forced, poorly if at all developed moral about power corrupting people that popped up from time to time in the most obvious way possible)

There were some good sides to it. As I mentioned above, it had pretty nice art. There was the, also mentioned above, lack of some of my least favorite characters. There was no love triangle. Or any more complicated love structure, for that matter. Actually, aside from one villain's backstory there was no romance subplot at all, there were some hints towards it in the first volume, but they lead nowhere and were never mentioned or alluded to in any way later on... Oh, here I go, and when I meant to talk about the pros, no less. Gaddes had more screen time. It was short. It made me want to get into Escaflowne again. Isn't it depressing when the best thing you can say about a story is that it made you want to go back to a different story?

Conclusion? Watch Escaflowne and stay away from Hitomi: Tenkuu no Escaflowne.
